Remembering Gulberg: Revisiting the Ruins 17 years after the massacre, Ehsan Jafri and Azhar Mody's Families meet at Gulberg Society

01, Mar 2019 | CJP Team

On February 28, 2002 a raging mob descended on Gulberg Society in Gujarat, baying for the blood of its residents. Many of them took refuge in the home of former Congress Member of Parliament Ehsan Jafri. Infact, when the crowd became uncontrollable, Jafri bravely stepped out to reason with them. But they lynched him brutally and then turned their attention to other residents.

As some residents tried to escape the rabid mob that went about setting homes on fire and murdering people, one young boy lost the grip of his mother’s hand. While the mother, Rupa Behn Mody, fell unconscious on the ground, Azhar went missing and hasn’t been heard from since then.

On the 17 anniversary of the carnage Rupa Behn, her husband Dara Mody and daughter Benaifer, Ehsan Jafri’s daughter Nishrin, son Tanveer and his wife Duraiya, and a few other survivors went back to Gulberg society to pay their respects to those who perished on that fateful day. Here are a few pictures. All images courtesy Gujarat Today.
