Mother found guilty of FGM in historic case in Britain

04, Feb 2019

On Friday, February 1, a Ugandan mother from London was convicted of “subjecting her 3-year-old daughter to female genital mutilation…in Britain’s first conviction for FGM,” the Thomson Reuters Foundation reported. FGM was made illegal in the country more than thirty years ago. The woman, who for legal reasons must remain unidentified, could be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison. Britain has previously seen three other trials involving FGM, in which all defendants were acquitted, the Guardian reported, noting that, per City University, an estimated 137,000 women and girls in England and Wales live with FGM.
