Mumbai : On January 31st 2020, CJP’s Teesta Setalvad spoke at a meeting on the NPR-NRC issue. The meeting was organised at Church of Our Lady of Salvation, popularly referred to as Portuguese Church, located in Dadar.
Around 100 people attended meeting. Discussion and Solutions were done on NPR issue. The audience consisted of eminent activists from all over Mumbai.
Teesta said that in the NPR exercise done by UPA in 2010, the place and date of birth of one’s parents were not asked as proposed in the upcoming NPR 2020.
National Population Register (NPR) 2020 exercise is scheduled to be held between 1st April and 30th September this year. Enumerators will ask a set of questions to collect the data of the residents.
NPR 2010 done by UPA included below questions :
Name, Father’s name, Mother’s name, Sex, Date of birth, Place of birth, Residential address (present and permanent), Marital status – if ever married, name of the spouse, Visible identification mark, Date of registration of Citizen, Serial number of registration and National Identity Number.
But new questions has been added in NPR 2020 which concerns people privacy and surveillance.
It is nowhere mentioned that during the exercise, the enumerators of NPR can ask details such as date and place of birth of parents, Aadhaar Card number, passport number, mobile number, Driving license number, voter ID card number, mother tongue, etc.
The NPR exercise which was conducted in 2010 does not include such questions. However, it is being included in the 2020 NPR.
One of the activist Mr Nuruddin Naik from audience said delegation should go to MP Supriya Sule requesting her to tell Mr Sharad Pawar to discuss with Maha Vikas Aghadi government to pass a resolution against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Population Register (NPR) and proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.
Earlier Congress president Sonia Gandhi had sought a written undertaking from the Shiv Sena that the new government in Maharashtra would work within the ambit of the Constitution.
Sonia Gandhi had given clear guidelines that the state government must work within the frame of Constitution. Sonia gandhi had also told state Congress leaders that if the government doesn’t function as expected, the party should quit it.
Another angry activist said if resolutions is not passed by Maha Vikas Aghadi government against CAA – NPR-NRC they will think to boycott all coming Municipal elections in Maharashtra including BMC elections.
