CJP sends complaint to India Today for its sting operation on Madrasas, terming them as hotspots The complaint also questions the sting operation and the hate peddled through the show

India Today has been conducting investigative journalism on COVID-19 related matters and in the 4th part of this series, its focus was on Madrasas. This show titled “Madrasa Hotpots: India Today Investigation” was hosted by Rahul Kanwal and was aired on April 10. This show was heavily and widely criticised for being blatantly Islamophobic and for its communal and misinformed content. The entire program was a sting operation carried out in Madrasa whereby an impression was given that children are “kept hidden” here and are at a risk of contacting COVID-19. However, madrasas serve as hostels for poor, destitute and orphaned children. This important piece of information appears to have been conveniently skipped in the show.

Raising, this concern and questioning the need for conducting a sting operation in what can be called a children’s shelter, CJP has sent a written complaint to the channel asking it to take down the video from all digital platforms and to issue an apology for doing such misinformed journalism, with the malicious intent of peddling hate in times of the worst health crisis being faced by the nation.

CJP is dedicated to finding and bringing to light instances of Hate Speech, so that the bigots propagating these venomous ideas can be unmasked and brought to justice. To learn more about our campaign again hate speech, please become a member. To support our initiatives, please donate now!
