Reuters reported that a Saudi Arabia-led military coalition said that it would give $1.5 billion in new humanitarian aid in Yemen, which is home to the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, according to the United Nations. The UN has said that 8.3 million people in Yemen are wholly dependent on outside food aid, with 400,000 children afflicted with severe acute malnutrition, which can be fatal. The coalition, which is backed by the United States, said it would run an air bridge to Marib, establish 17 overland corridors for aid deliveries, and help expand additional ports in Yemen so they can accept humanitarian and essential deliveries. According to Reuters, this statement comes at a time when Saudi Arabia and its allies are receiving increasing criticism over the Yemen conflict’s impact on civilians; more than 10,000 people have been killed in airstrikes and fighting on the ground, Reuters said. In November, following international criticism, the Saudi-led coalition relaxed a three-week-long blockade on Yemen’s airports and ports that had severely stymied the delivery of humanitarian aid.
