New Cuban constitution sets up legalisation of gay marriage
06, Aug 2018
Cuba’s National Assembly recently unanimously approved a new constitution that defines marriage as “the consensual union of two people regardless of gender,” the Guardian reported, saying that this paved the way for the legalisation of same-sex marriage in the country. There will be a referendum on the new constitution later in 2018. The current constitution defines marriage as as the “voluntary union between a man and woman”. In Cuba, it is already illegal for state and private sector employers to discriminate based on sexual orientation. Earlier this year, a measure was put in place that provides for high fines and even the suspension of licenses for private employers who discriminate on the basis of sexuality, gender, or race. Gender confirmation surgery has been legal in Cuba since 2008, and is free for patients.
