International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

02, Dec 2017 | CJP Team

December 2 is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. According to ILO estimates, 40.3 million people worldwide are victims of modern slavery, with 15.4 million in forced marriage and 24.9 million in forced labour. One out of every four modern slavery victims are children. Forced labor disproportionately impacts women and girls, as they comprise 99% of those forced to work in the commercial sex industry, and 58% in other sectors. The ILO has adopted a new Protocol aiming to bolster efforts worldwide to end forced labor. It is legally binding, and has been in force since November 2016. The 50 for Freedom campaign is looking to convince at least 50 nations to ratify the Forced Labor Protocol by 2018. The campaign has listed ten common situations for victims of modern slavery here.
