An advocate, activist and a political leader, Ishrat Jahan, has been incarcerated in connection with the Delhi Riots conspiracy case. She was the first woman to become Congress’ Municipal Councilor from 2012-17, and had reportedly also been associated with the All India Congress Committee (AICC). She has been facing constant harassment and physical abuse from fellow inmates and has also developed medical issues like hypertension, anxiety and also suffered a spinal injury after taking a fall in prison.

Charges

Sections 13 (Punishment for unlawful activities), 16 (punishment for terrorist act), 17 (punishment for raising funds for terrorist act) and 18 (punishment for conspiracy) of the UAPA. Sections 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 307 (attempt to murder), 186 (voluntarily obstructing public servant on duty) of the Indian Penal Code.

July 6, 2021

Ishrat Jahan moves court for regular bail. Bail plea likely to be heard on August 2.

Dec 22, 2020

Delhi court directs jail authorities to ensure Jahan’s security on her plea citing harassment and physical abuse from fellow inmates.

Nov 26, 2020

The Sessions court rejects her plea for interim bail on grounds that she is not Covid-19 positive and that her hypertension and anxiety issues don't seem medically emergent.

July 31, 2020

Delhi High Court dismisses her plea ruling that all the requirements under Section 43-D of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 had been duly satisfied and hence, there was no ground for interference with the sessions court order.

June 15, 2020

Sessions Court passes an order granting the police an extension of 60 days to complete the investigation in cases pertaining to the violence against her.

June 10, 2020

Ishrat Jahan released on interim bail for 10 days on account of her wedding.

March 21, 2020

Granted bail by Additional Sessions Judge Manjusha Wadhwa but is re-arrested under UAPA charges for a larger conspiracy in the Delhi violence case in FIR number 59 of 2020.

February 26, 2020

Ishrat Jahan arrested by the Delhi Police in FIR number 44 of 2020 for charges of rioting, obstructing a public servant on duty, assault, attempt to murder under the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
