ERENDRO LEICHOMBAM

Erendro Leichombam is a 40-year-old political activist who reportedly holds a postgraduate degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School, and is a former associate of civil rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila. He has in the past, been charged with sedition and most recently the draconian NSA for criticising the government online.

Charges

Sections 124A (Sedition), 153 (causing provocation to riot) and 505 (public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code, detention under the National Security Act (NSA), 1980.

July 19, 2021

SC grants bail to Erendro Leichombam, and rules that his continued detention would amount to a violation of the right to life and personal liberty under Article 21 of the Constitution.

June 28, 2021

Leichombam's father, L Raghumani Singh, moves the Supreme Court, filing a habeas corpus plea against his illegal detention under NSA.

May 17, 2021

Leichombam is granted bail by the local court but on the same day, an order is released by the District Magistrate of Imphal West District to book him under the NSA for his online post highlighting that cow urine and cow dung as cures for the Coronavirus, something often advocated by many members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is incorrect.

May 13, 2021

He is picked up by the Imphal police for his Facebook post after a complaint was filed by state BJP general secretary P. Premachanda Meitei and party vice president Usham Deban.

July 28, 2020

Leichombam charged under sedition for another Facebook post in which he uploaded a picture of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the newly-elected Rajya Sabha MP and captioned the picture “son of servant”. He spends a day in jail before getting bail.

June 2018

Released from jail on bail after 2 weeks.

May 2018

Erendro Leichombam arrested for posting a video on Facebook that the police claims amounts to “promoting enmity between different groups and criminal intimidation”.
