AKHIL GOGOI

Perhaps best known as a peasants' rights activist, Akhil Gogoi is also a known crusader against corruption. He is the recipient of Shanmugam Manjunath Integrity Award 2008 for his undeterred fight against corruption, National Right to Information Award by Public Cause Research Foundation. He is also the founder of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) in Assam. He also won a state assembly election, contesting from behind bars, and is now the MLA from Sibsagar.

Charges

Gogoi has been charged by Assam Police in 12 cases. IPC sections 120B (criminal conspiracy). 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, etc), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integrity), 144 (unlawful assembly) sections 18 (punishment for conspiracy) and 39 (support given to terrorist organisation) of UAPA. Sections 3 and 4 (public mischief caused to damage public property) of The Prevention of Damage to Public Property.

July 1, 2021

Akhil Gogoi is discharged by a National Investigation Agency Court in connection with the last pending case against him related to the anti-citizenship law protests at the Chandmari Police Station.

June 22, 2021

NIA Special Court clears Gogoi of UAPA charges in connection with the case registered in the Chabua police station. He is still booked under UAPA at the Chandmari police station.

May 3, 2021

Gogoi contests the Assam Assembly elections from Sibsagar and wins by a margin of 11,875 votes despite being behind bars.

April 9, 2021

The Gauhati HC upholds the bail granted to Gogoi in 2020 last year that had held that the materials against Gogoi cannot be prima-facie said to be a "terrorist act" done with the intention of threatening the unity, integrity and sovereignty of India or a terrorist act done with the intention to strike terror in the people.

SC rejects Akhil Gogoi’s bail plea in UAPA case pertaining to the Chandmari police station.

January 7, 2021

Gauhati HC rejects Gogoi’s bail plea in connection with the case filed at the Chandmari police station that was later transferred to the NIA. Charges include Sedition, conspiracy and those under UAPA sections for conspiracy and support given to a terrorist organisation.

October 1, 2020

Akhil Gogoi gets bail by National Investigation Agency Special Court in the case registered at the Chabua police station pertaining to violent protests over anti CAA protests and alleged links to Maoists.

July 16, 2020

Guwahati High Court granted bail to Gogoi in cases pertaining to alleged burning of post office, circle office and Branch office of United Bank of India at Chauba in Dibrugarh District during anti CAA protests.

July 11, 2020

Gogoi tests positive for Covid-19 in jail.

December 27, 2019

Akhil Gogoi was taken into judicial custody after the case was transferred to NIA from Assam Police on 17th December.

December 12, 2019

Arrested by Police from Jorhat as a “preventive measure” in light of deteriorating law and order situation. While in custody, there were arrested for other cases registered across the country.
