CJP writes to NHRC over Police brutality against teaching candidates in Lucknow, UP Yet another instance of violence against protesters by the Uttar Pradesh Police

Taking note of another recent incident in which the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police once again brutally targeted student activists, CJP has lodged a strong protest with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC): this time, candidates who were peacefully protesting procedural lapses in the selection process for assistant teachers in the state.
On November 2, students were protesting two court rulings that had quashed the selection of more than 12,000 government teachers and that ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe in to the selection process to appoint 68,500 more teachers. Candidates who had passed the Assistant Teacher Recruitment Exam but who were not chosen for counselling had gathered to protest outside the UP State Assembly in Lucknow, along with others who were demanding basic employment opportunities in the state. Photographic material reportedly indicated that protesters sustained grave injuries, with some requiring treatment at the local civil hospital.

This is not the first instance in which the UP Police has engaged in violence against peaceful protesters. In July, CJP wrote to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to draw attention the police’s treatment of student leaders Pooja Shukla and Richa Singh. We have once again written to the NHRC regarding this latest episode, requesting that the Commission investigate this incident, and take steps to hold to account those responsible.
The NHRC has written back to us, acknowledging the receipt of our complaint, and we now await action from them.
