CJP's FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19 CRISIS IN 2020

In 2020, as the COVID-19 crisis struck and an unprecedented lockdown was announced, CJP swung into action, pressing all its resources in fighting rampant hunger on the streets and pushing officials into action. Here's our appeal from last year.

Don't turn away...

As we enter the third phase of the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, many among us do not have the privilege of an assured pay cheque. Some of Mumbai and Maharashtra’s most marginalized people need us to step in, so no one is forced to starve amidst this crisis.

Be it families of Mumbai’s migrant labourers, slum-dwellers, sex workers, orphans, destitute, homeless, hand-cart pullers, taxi and auto rickshaw drivers, vegetable vendors, carpenters, scrap purchasers, delivery boys, waiters, domestic helps, people with HIV/AIDS, transgender persons, they all need our immediate assistance to survive.

So far CJP has helped provide relief supplies to over 35,000 people. These include nearly 6,000 families of migrant labourers hailing from Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and interior Maharashtra.

CJP also provided supplies to 2,000 more low-income families of zardozi and kadia workers, daily-wage workers from the North East facing social ostracism, households led by single women and widows. To help these people we partnered with Bhakhar Foundation, Tangkhul Welfare Society Mumbai as well as many other groups working with transgenders, elderly and orphans.

CJP with Prayas Ek Koshish is helping 2,000 families from Ganeshnagar, Mhatarpada, Navjeet Nagar, Hanuman Tekdi, Bandivali Hill, Yadav Nagar, Bhagat Singh Nagar, Jeevan Nagar various ‘basti’ pockets in Andheri west, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, and many other areas across Mumbai.

We are helping provide supplies to nearly 5,000 families living in slums and low income neighbourhoods across Mumbai. Our delivery trucks are making stops at Malvani, Gorai, Goregaon, Mira Bhayandar, Khar Danda, Juhu Koliwada, Kalina, Bandra (East), Mumbai Central, Mumbra, and even Navi Mumbai!

From the APMC market, to the FCI NGO quota to other vendors, the CJP on ground collection and distribution team has been at it day and night to ensure that no one goes to bed hungry. All of these relief efforts are also being carried out while ensuring strict adherence to all social distancing and lockdown related protocol.

We have also helped provide relief to families living in impoverished neighbourhoods in containment zones that have been completely sealed off. These include Worli Koliwada and Sion.

CJP is also helping 300 families of mathadi workers and daily wage earners in Mangelwadi Basti, Santacuz (West) and another 150 families each in both Goregaon (East) and Mira Road. CJP with Jimme Foundation is helping nearly 300 families of sex workers from Kamathipura, each having two to three children.

Throughout our relief efforts we have made it a point to reach out equally to people from all communities, castes and linguistic backgrounds. We have even provided assistance to micro-communities like members of the Nathapanthi Dawari Gosavi Samaj who were stuck in a containment zone.

We urge you to donate generously, so we can continue to provide assistance to families in need. The relief packages include wheat flour, rice, pulses, onions, potatoes, oil, salt, sugar, tea, washing and bath soap.
